Give our bugs some love | Local events

While staring out my window last night, thinking about what I was going to write in this newsletter, I had a flash of inspiration. I saw fireflies in my backyard for the first time this season. I hustled outside to relive my favorite childhood memories.
Those silly bugs are rather magical, like tiny fairies flying with little lanterns. I tried not to think about how few were in my yard and made a mental note to keep up the good fight of not cleaning out the dead leaves until late spring.
This morning, a friend shared an article titled, “Insects Don’t Get Love Like Other Animals. But Kansas Can’t Survive Without Them,” and of course, it mentioned my favorite, the lightning bug.
“People remember fireflies lighting up rural areas around them — or suburban areas even,” Milman said. “We’ve got this kind of loss happening. Loss in experience, loss in memory.”
That little kid who chased fireflies at dusk in 1962 had no idea lifelong happy memories were being created. That little kid grew up to be a mom and then a grandma who encouraged her children and grandchildren to do the same. Will the next generation have the same experience, or will those flashing little bugs be gone forever?
That is why I write this newsletter, in hopes that we can unite to save our environment for another seven generations to enjoy.
Until next time, Randi
