Urgent: Oppose Evergy’s $2 Billion Fossil Gas Plant Proposal!

Hey environment warriors, it’s been a hot minute since you last heard from me. I can explain.

I had a bad case of election anxiety. Apparently, I am not alone. According to the American Psychological Association, more than 7 in 10 adults reported the future of our nation (77%) as a significant source of stress in their lives.

Honestly, I slipped into "I'm just one person—does my advocacy really matter?" I had to dig deep to find my inner Erin Brockovich.

So here I am, recommitting myself to environmental advocacy through the 316 United Newsletter.

Spring has arrived, and I’d love to hear about any upcoming events you have planned that focus on the environment or simply enjoying the outdoors. Let’s step outside, reconnect with nature, and inspire each other!

URGENT: Your Voice Matters—Oppose Evergy’s $2 Billion Fossil Gas Plant Proposal!

Time is running out! Evergy has asked the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) for permission to build two expensive fossil gas plants in Reno and Sumner Counties, costing you—the consumer—$2 billion.

Read about the proposed price increase here.

Read the Evergy docket number: 25-EKCE-207-PRE

Why should you care? Here’s why:

· No Choice, Higher Bills: Evergy is a for-profit monopoly. That means you must pay whatever they decide, even if these plants never produce a single watt of electricity.

· Profits Over People: Evergy stockholders profit from building projects—not from providing affordable energy. Customers, not shareholders, shoulder the financial risks.

· Environmental Harm: Burning natural gas increases climate change by releasing carbon dioxide and leaking methane, a greenhouse gas far more harmful in the short term.

· Health Risks: Gas plants put local communities at greater risk for health issues like asthma and respiratory problems due to air pollution.

· Unpredictable Costs: Remember Winter Storm Uri? Natural gas prices fluctuate dramatically, leaving you vulnerable to sudden spikes in electricity bills.

· Water Waste: Producing energy from fossil gas consumes huge amounts of water—water Kansas can't afford to waste.

· Uncertain Need for Power: Evergy claims the plants are necessary for new data centers driven by AI technology, yet these centers aren’t even guaranteed to come to Kansas.

· Renewable Energy is the Solution: Kansas has abundant wind and solar energy. Renewable sources could power our future without the risks and costs of fossil fuels.

Act Now—You Can Make a Difference! Tell the KCC you oppose Evergy’s expensive, risky fossil gas plants. It's easy:
